The aim of this paper is to attempt to demonstrate how contemporary Irish writer Edna O'Brien represents the decline of the Irish Catholic family in her Country Girls Trilogy (The Country Girls (1960), The Lonely Girl (1962), and Girls In Their Married Bliss (1964)). The introductory chapter will focus on facts which show what life in Ireland was like and how the system carefully kept everyone in their place. The following chapters will focus on the Irish family and Catholicism, detailing the lives of the heroines of the Trilogy. Their lives will be shown, from their humble beginnings in the country, to the bitter end in the city. The main two areas of interest will be love, family and religion.
